To begin the workshop please take a look at three very useful websites for visualizing data plotted in a scatterplot, the concept of correlation between x and y, and the best fitting regression line.
There will be three handouts used during this followup workshop.
Height versus Armspan.doc for use with WebStat software.
The data sheet from the ACCLAIM Elementary Statistics Institute, Summer 2002.
We will use a sheet of graphpaper from the Mathematics Help Center website. Form4C-BW.pdf
During the ACCLAIM Elementary and High School Statistics Institutes, Summer 2002, we discussed the concepts of
plotting data on a scatterplot (an xy-graph)
the correlation between two quantitative variables x and y.
the idea of the best fitting line
and the idea of the regression line, which is the best fitting line that minimizes the error between the data points and the regression line.
As an example of all of these ideas the participants in the workshop participated in the Height Versus Armspan Activity.
Some other handouts that we used during the summer 2002 ACCLAIM Statistics Institutes that might be of interest to you.
