Double Major in Mathematics and Computer Science

Besides the Options, another way to strengthen your Computer Science degree, and to improve your employment and graduate study opportunities, is to combine the major with a second major in Mathematics.

A double Major gives a student a broad background, which may impress prospective employers or prepare the student for advanced work. The applied Mathematics (Option B) of the Mathematics major is particularly appropriate for Computer Science majors. See Section "Sample Programs" for a sample course program.

Courses in the theory of Computer Science (CS 4170, CS 4245) are recommended for those students considering graduate study.4 They may be counted toward both majors. Students who take the Graduate Record Examination should try to complete these courses before taking the exam.

Other courses contribute to a significant overlap between the two majors. These include Math/CS 3750, Math/CS 4750, Math/CS 4245, Stat 3401, and Stat 3502.
