Generating Set Search for Optimization:
What is it, why does it work, and why is it useful?

Generating set search is a class of direct search methods for optimization, that is, methods that do not use derivative information. In this talk, I will explain the motivation for developing and studying such methods and the mathematical analysis behind them. I will also present several examples of problems that have been solved using these techniques.
