Computer Careers

Computers --- the machines themselves and the programs to run them --- are useful in many areas of modern society. All employment forecasts predict strong job opportunities for well-prepared computer personnel. Jobs involving computers are intellectually challenging and financially rewarding. If you like logical reasoning, and can work with discipline and attention to detail, you should consider a major in Computer Science.

The following list represents a few of the kinds of businesses and institutions that employ computer scientists:

These --- and others --- cover many different interests. Because Computer Science has become important in all areas of society, it is possible to combine a C.S. major with virtually any other discipline. If you have an interest in art or archeology, biology or business, mathematics or music, physics or philosophy, statistics or sociology, or any of hundreds of other areas, it's likely that you can find applications of computing in your field of interest.

Because of the many varied uses of the field, all computer science majors are strongly encouraged to declare a minor in some other field; all majors in other fields are strongly encouraged to consider a Computer Science minor.

Many students get started in careers of their choice while still students at CSUEB through co-op positions with employers throughout the Bay Area. This gives them both university credit for their work experience and an advantage in finding a job after graduation, and of course income from the co-op job itself.

Math Careers

Modern technological society has many fields that need specialists in mathematics. In the coming years, there will be an increasing number of job opportunities for those who know and use mathematics. These include scientists, researchers, space technicians, mathematics teachers, actuaries and insurance specialists, and people who can combine mathematical knowledge with a scientific, computer, or business background.

If you are considering graduate school, mathematics is often an excellent undergraduate background -- not only for graduate work in mathematics itself, but even for an M.B.A. program, or medical or law school. Many people look at a degree in mathematics as proof of intelligence and a logical approach to problem solving.
