Students can choose between a Bachelor of
Science (B.S.) in Biology or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in
Biology. Those students who wish to become professional biologists,
or to go into health careers, higher education, or to graduate
school usually obtain a B.S. Those planning on using their
Biology degree in lower education or as an advocation may
be interested in the B.A. Our advisors can help you decide.
The program in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (a B.S. option)
is offered to qualify students for California hospital traineeships
which lead to state licensure as medical technologists. A
postbaccalaureate program in Biotechnology prepares students
for careers in genetic engineering and biotechnology. Classes
are offered on the Hayward campus in well-equipped facilities,
at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories located on Monterey
Bay, and at a number of field locations throughout the San
Francisco Bay Area, including the South San Francisco Bay National
Wildlife Refuge Field Station, the Cleary Reserve, and the
Garin Reserve adjacent to campus. Our Graduate Programs include
all areas of biology and culminates in an M.S. in Biology
or an M.S. in Marine Science.
Currently, the Department has two programs sponsored by the
National Institutes of Health: the Minority Biomedical Research
Support (MBRS) and the Community College Summer Bridge; both
programs are designed to increase the number of underrepresented
minorities in biology nationwide.
Qualified upper division students can take graduate level
courses and use them toward their degree requirements. Students
must see the faculty who is teaching the course to determine
if they are prepared to take a graduate level course.
